Frisco Woodracks

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Central of Georgia Railway Historical Soc : One Thread

Hello, everybody. Does anyone have any information on the woodracks the Central leased from the SLSF during the 50s and 60s? They were numbered in the 15000 series, and I believe they retained their Frisco yellow paint. I would appreciate any information anyone has on the paint and leteering scheme on these cars. Thanks in advance, Tom Holley

Nick (and others), The Frisco leased 200 woodracks to the Central of Georgia about August 1960. The cars were built in 1951-52 by the Frisco (SL-SF RR) as cars 5000-5199. As you noted, the Central just added a "1" in front of the road number (15000-15199). A diagram for these cars appears in a CofGa Freight Equipment Diagram book. They are also listed on a freight equipment report dated August 31, 1963. I don't know for sure, but I think they were returned to the Frisco sometime around 1965.

Tom

I have the following info for you.

SLSF 5000-5199 were built in 1951 and 1952, they had IL (interior lenght) of 38' 3" (the same as the Atlas wood rack), they were painted yellow. Frisco built them in their own shops from General Steel Casting kits, like alot of railroads did. As you can see when C of Ga leased them they placed a number "1" before the original numbers. It's also believed that there were 300 cars that were leased but it's unclear to me if that's correct. If any one has some info on that please contact me.

regards Nick

The only photo that I've seen of one, was in a caboose book, and you can only see about 1/3 of that car. Look at the shot of the ex-DL&W cab on the Appalachacola Northern, on page76 of CABINS,CRUMMIES, & HACKS : THE SOUTH. You can see the open ends, and the CG in the patch, but no car number.
