Thanks Lars.

You know, he sounds like a normal guy, who is fighting against perceived threat to his way of life, his religion, and what he believes in. Any patriot might do the same. I am not excusing what he is doing but I understand where he is coming from. He is a hero to his people, his followers; he is their freedom fighter.

Why does the US need to be there anyway? For oil? Why can't we just pull out and let these people live their own way? Why are Americans the only ones who get freedom of religion and get to run things the way they see fit. Why do we need to make whole other countries behave and believe as we do?

Catherine,

It's a democracy deal. Our people thru our government have consistantly tried to push the idea of democracy throughout the world. Expedienceies such as in Chile & Nigerauga don't really detract from the overall belief that democracy is a good idea. It's a take the occasional heat but keep your eye on the ball kind of thing. Economics intrude in here but then economics do in everything from trading turtle meat to arbitrage.

Maybe we're wrong. Maybe fiefdoms are better but you're into a hard sell.
