Al...if you're convinced your religious beliefs are correct, then why fight? Why buy a gas mask? If you lie down and die -- like Jesus, for instance -- won't you be in heaven that much quicker?

One of the little ones came home troubled. A teacher had told the class that if we lose this war, the children would all be forcibly converted to Islam. I told the child that we would not lose, and not to worry about it.

The child persisted. How did I know for sure that we wouldn't lose this war? How could I be certain the children wouldn't be converted to Islam?

I told the child that we would blow this planet into a flying gravel heap and destroy every living thing before we would lose.

The child pondered for a while and then asked, "Is THAT better than Islam???"

Helen, I don't have little ones anymore. My 19 yr. old daughter called from Texas today. She's in the Air Force. Wanted to talk about being absolute in personal conviction. My almost 18 yr. old son took his mock test for the Air Force yesterday. My husband is a reservist, but he's kind of an old fart so I don't worry... much. He's been to many floods, fires, and a riot once so I guess they will keep him home. I don't know if a flying gravel heap would be better, but I do think it would be a damn shame.

whatsinaname -- I'm sorry for all the worry you will be put through. They have taken young reservists right out of class, and a veteran friend of ours was called back to service even before the formal announcement was made. I'm sure what formal use we can be, but we'll be ready to help wherever necessary.
