Clarification - Not Leaky Roof, Hole in Roof!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

The hole is about 1 foot square, roof is shingled. I was wondering if I couldget some sheet metal, slide it up under the good shingles and let it run to the edge of the roof, then nail it down? ANy other suggestions?

Yes, the sheet metal will work. What caused the hole? Make sure no tree branches touch the roof because that will do damage. Be careful, there might be some soft spots you can fall through. You could fix it the right way with a little wood and a bundle of shingles. Maybe $20. You need a few tools but if the roof is not steep it is not hard. Do you have any carpenter friend that could help you? I think it is easier to do then explain how to do it. Time to start saving for a new roof. Lets see what help you get from others.

Dianne, if it's a hole because of the roof rotting, not a hole from a tree branch, etc., you might consider doing the whole roof area with steel if you can afford it or the roof isn't too steep. The whole roof might be getting ready to go on you and you don't want that! Steel is VERY easy to put on. It's not something that you need a lot of skill to work with. If you can swing a hammer you can do the job. If you don't want to cut the steel with a circular saw with a steel cutting blade, you can order the steel special cut at your lumber yard. So if your roof is, say, 13 1/4 feet long, you can order it and then not have to cut anything when you get it home. If the roof is very soft, use the longest roofing nails you can so you can get into the best wood in the roof. Roofing is fun once you get up there. You can sit back and see things from a new perspective when you stop for a rest. :)
