Property values in cities and suburbs down, rural up? Hard assets more desireable?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I copied thge following terse statements from another forum. Do you agree? What do you expect the result of the recent terrorist acts to be? ****************************************************************

Martial Law ?? and shift in values

At the least, Airports, all POE, restrictions on vistors from abroad, round-ups of of all ME on visas.

Airline business is now toast! Amtrack will be inundated.

Property values in cities and suburbs down, rural up. Acceleration of trend to move to the 'country' and work on-line.

HARD ASSETS BECOME MORE DESIRABLE, PAPER AND BLIP ASSETS, LESS

Except for a higher level of security, I highly doubt any of the above.

I agree with Yup. This is a terrible thing that has happened, but I think it's limited. You're suggesting that the acts of a very few individuals are going to destroy the American way of life. Don't think so. America is going to kick butt on this one, and I sure as heck wouldn't want to be any of the terrorists left alive and know the full weight of the US gov. is going to be after them. No one will ever give up on this one. Ever heard of a sleeping giant? The US was one with terrorist activity. Well, we're awake now and those people are toast.

I think my retirement savings are secure. Where ever you copied that statement from is just from some fool who enjoys getting excited over things. Likes to get his jollies from alarmist thinking. I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts the same person was predicting the end of the world with Y2K.

No, there won't be any martial law.

There may well be a small movement of folks at least moving to the suburbs but they're likely going to be the ones who weren't particularly happy with the urban lifestyle before today's events.

Amtrak could not handle any large sudden increase in traffic and they simply don't serve very many areas any more never mind transoceanic traffic. For the forseeable future it's either going to be take a commercial flight or drive. Given a sufficiently motivated organization with plenty of resources there's not an airport in the world that could not be breached in a similar manner.

My only real long term concern out of all this is what new attacks on our rights and liberties are we going to have to fend off as a result of all this. Every time we have a major terrorist act in the U.S. some congresscritter dreams up some new way of plaguing us all in the name of national security, or saving the children, or the whales, or something.
