GIVE BLOOD.

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Folks, one of the consequences of theses acts of war against our nations is that there are a lot of casualties just now in New York City and Washington D.C. Their need for blood on an emergency basis is very likely to put a real strain on the national blood supply. If you'd like to contribute in a meaningful way then I suggest you go to your nearest blood bank and GIVE BLOOD. I'm heading out the door right now to do just that.

Very good ideal.

On one of my email lists, someone posted that you're best off making an appointment to donate, as the wait for walk-ins is 60-90 minutes. Probably best, in any event, to contact your local donor authority before you just jump and go. Some facilities will probably be overwhelmed by donors.

The American Red Cross just had a spokesperson on the radio asking for people to please wait until tomorrow or over the next couple of days before donating.

Locally, we have been asked to donate money right now. Everything has to get organized for now.

Saw on the news here that there is a four hour wait to give blood, and donors should wait until tomorrow to come in.

If you waited until late in the day the wait would be long but I got in and donated inside of two hours. The line that formed after I got there was incredible but they got themselves organized and started processing them through. I hit my four gallon mark with today's pint. Our center director told us that the NYC area typical imports 100,000 units of blood annually from Europe and with air traffic shut down that need will have to be made up from the domestic U.S. supply. It was very gratifying to see the large number of university students who were there.

Also remember that they are going to continue to need blood for the next several weeks, possibly a month, in order to replenish stocks around the country that they are calling in now. The latest was an especial request for universal donors -- O+ and O- .

I'm A+, but I'm going to go and see about donating anyway.
