air valve construction

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I am trying to construct a small valve that will combine air from two different hoses. I want it to be variable (more from one less from another). What it is really is a singal hose with gas moving through it. I need to build something that will allow another hose to be attached and will suck a variable amount of air through itself (it just leads to open air). If you understand this then please lend some help.

what size hose? garden,, air lines for a fish tank?? how about reverseing a 1 into 2 hose adapter. Most hardware stores sell them,, and the extra fittings needed

Sounds like you're trying to mix air with some type of moving gas, or perhaps measure its flow through vacume. If you used a Y, a one-way valve, and a flow control valve, you should be able to suck air into the system at a controlled rate. This is assuming the main flow of gas is fast enough to create a vacume. "Controlled" is the key, depending on your application a very accurate flow control valve may be needed. If the main gas is explosive, get experts to build whatever you need. All this sounds very much like a carburator. Don't go experimenting and blow yourself up.

Here is an idea.

Get something like a clear glass jar or bottle with a big stopper.

Make three holes through the stopper and put plastic hoses through each hole, push two of the hoses near the bottom of the bottle and the other just below the stopper.

Put a bit of water in the bottle so as to cover the bottom of the two long hoses. Now put your two input gasses into the long hoses and draw your ourput through the short one.

You will be able to see which gases are being drawn in by the flow of bubbles from each and the little bit of turbulence caused by the bubbling will help to mix things before they go out the output.

Just a few ideas.
