Need a good wood-burning stove

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We would really like to put a good wood stove in our strawbale house. Do any of you know where we could get a good deal on one or have one for sale or trade? We live in Northeastern Colorado. Thanks! Pam

Where abouts in NE CO? I'll check with a friend in Brush. You might put an ad in Sterling newspaper.

I got a Northern Tools catalog and was surprised to find that they have several reasonably priced wood burning, coal burning and corn burning stoves! They also have stores besides their catalogs. They have a website too.

Pam, I researched wood stoves several years ago. And decided that the one for me was a Vermont Castings. We bought a used one for $100.00 and was never sorry. We sold it with the house when we moved. If I were to buy one again it would be Vermont Castings. Linda

Vermont casings has been sold. They no longer make stoves the quality that they did back in 1986 when I bough my second one (which I bought because my wife likes red and I though catalitic was a good idea). So if you buy VC have it be an older one - my 1986 model defiant encore has been used the entirety of every winter since then as the sole heat for my house and shows no deterioration beyond the surface nicks where various things have been dropped on the porcelain. If you have to buy your wood, I would recommend in depth research on a corn burner.
