What do you do to keep your teeth/bones/eyes healthy?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Just went to the dentist yesterday - got me wondering; homesteaders surely try to prevent visits to doctors/dentists....do you have anything you do especially to help keep your teeth & bones & eyes healthy? I know many of you are familiar with natural things that would help, & would love to know more - thanks!

Along these lines, someone told me that there is a much better product for calcium than tums (my old standby) was it Calcitrate, caltrate, Kalcan?????

A gal at work told me the other day that her grandmother always sticks a thin layer of cheese between her gums and teeth at night and she has absolutely NO plaque because of doing this. I have never heard this before but have no reason to doubt this woman.

I have found that flossing regularly makes a major difference. Also, don't keep drinking sugary drinks all day long (according to dentist friends of ours)--the water is the best thing.

Soda pop is THE WORST THING you can drink to ruin your teeth and bones!!! The phosphoric acid in all pop eats your enamel off your teeth and leeches calcium right out of your bones! Yuck!!!

Calcium citrate (available at Walmart cheap) is the best supplement for teeth/bones, NOT milk or milk products, the calcium in milk is not very absorbable at all. Deep green and yellow and orange vegetables are THE BEST natural sources of absorbable calcium, if you don't want to take supplements.

Also, don't use tooth paste ( or mouth rinses) with floride in it, floride is a toxic chemical that builds up to harmful levels over time, and also leeches clacium out of your teeth and bones.

My goodness, I have just spent over 2-1/2 hours reading that watercure site. I am greatly intrigued. In fact, I am going to try it on myself and my son.

To keep plaque off the teeth and really promote gum healing, put one drop of tea tree oil (from your pharmacy or natural food store, on top of the regular toothpaste and brush. My dentist is astounded and you can bet that he tells no one else. The taste is not the best at first but you get used to it. Jean

After checking out that website, I immediately phoned my mom. She has suffered from hives for about 7 years. I asked her to try the water treatment (1/2 glass of water every half hour for two days) to see how it affected her hives. She promised she would try it.

I've been an avid water drinker for several years and can't remember my last cold, sinus infection, sore throat, etc. Now, if only drinking water did something to help my clumsiness.

Wishing you enough.

I really hope the site is good , I would love to give up soda !

Patty, My husband used to have terrible leg pains at night, and he didnt have any idea what could be causing them. He found out that caffeine can cause such pains (I cant remember the biological explanation), and so he cut out all caffeine. His leg pains left immediately, and only return after a day of trangression into caffeine. He had those pains for years, so bad that he couldnt sleep, I had to rub his legs nightly, and he took lots of painkiller. He has been symptom-free for over a year now, and it is definately the caffeine that causes it.

Patty I'm with you I'm hooked on the sodas (diet) My wife quit drinking anything but water a few months ago. After reading the water cure site I guess she needs more natural salt.

Green tea is not only an antitoxiant, it has natural floride.

Gum disease is the biggest enemy of your teeth. About ten years ago, my dentist recommended that I come in for cleanings every three months instead of every six because my teeth are so crowded that flossing wasn't preventing the pockets from forming which then attract bacteria which leads to gum disease. But, at the same time, I came across someone that recommended I brush my teeth with a runny mix of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda twice a month. It tastes terrible but it truly works. The way I do it is that I floss my teeth first and then make up a thin watery paste of the two ingredients and brush my teeth thoroughly with it. Don't swallow it, just spit it out. Finally, when you are done brushing, don't rinse your mouth out with water. Just spit out the last mouthful and go to bed for the night. The paste will stay along your gum line and eliminate the bacteria while you sleep which will allow the gums to reattach to the teeth. Once I started doing that all of my check ups have been excellent and there is absolutely no pocketing or evidence of bacteria on my gums. I only go every six months and I am not flossing on a regular basis so it is not that flossing is doing the work. This is a very inexpensive thing to do and sure beats having your teeth scaled or pulled out due to gum disease. I don't recommend doing it any more often as it is not necessary and you don't want to continuously kill the good bacteria out of your mouth either. Please start using this system. It could save you a lot of dentist bills and allow you to keep all of your teeth. Incidentally, I am 48 which makes me prime age for gum disease. I have not lost a single tooth nor do I have any evidence of gum disease.
