Don Davey

My mother has 3 original paintings by Don Davey. They are Steamer Natchez, DemArchy Patio, and French Quarter Days. She is interested in knowing a little more about this artist, and if his paintings are worth anything.

Hi, just a suggestion - check your local library for information regarding values of paintings if you haven't already. Most public libraries carry Davenport's guide to art values. This will give you an idea of how much the works may have brought at a previous auction.

Hi Shari,

An original Don Davey print might be worth $100 - $300. What you have is probably a print. Colony Publishing distributed these copies. The black and white prints which appear to be original pencil sketches may be purchased today in poster size, 8 x 10 prints, and 5 x 7. If you like his work and would like more, I have the web site addresses where you may purchase other copies. There are a few of his prints that I have only found on e-bay. Also, there were sets of prints(4)published which were 10 x 13 of New Orleans and San Francisco that were printed in color. There is very little information available about Don Davey, other than the information provided by Colony Publishing. I purchased several of his prints in New Orleans in 1994 and came across more of his work in San Francisco in 2001. More recently, E-bay has had several prints for bidding. If you need more information or are looking for a specific print, just send an e-mail and I will be more that happy to help you.

I have two black and white 5x7 prints of San Francisco by Don Davey.

I opened the back of one of them and found some information about Mr. Davey.

He began his career at the American Academy of Art in Chicago and his illustrations have been seen in such magazines as McCalls, The Saturday Evening Post and Fortune.

He served on the faculty of the Academy of Art in San Francisco and was instrumental in the formation of the Society of Illustrators of which he served as President.

He has won numerous awards and has a lerge following worldwide.

I hope this information is some help to you

I just purchased 4 Don Davey prints for $1.00 at a second hand shop. They are of San Fransisco and have his name and the number 68 at the bottom of each print. Would like to know if the 68 is the year or the # of the print. Thanks.

I have something a little different. A brown paper folder copyright 1966, and on front it says four sketches of the french quarter for framing and above it a small sketch identical to one of the four larger sketches inside. The large sketches are coloured and signed don davey and 1967 Don Davey,New Orleans,LA. They are in mint condition with a little yellowing around the sketchs. There is also a piece of paper titled the Landmarks of Old New Orleans, which tells about the four sketches titled Pirates Alley,Chartres Street,Brulatour Courtyard, and The Wishing Gates. I would also like to know what this complete set is worth.

Hi, I also have a Don Davey print. It's San Francisco China town maybe and a street car in it. It is dated 1967. I found it at a thrift store for 1.98, please let me know if you find anything more out. Do you know if he is still alive? Thanks, Donna
