Davis Urged To Loosen Driver License Requirements

(KFWB) 9.06.01, 10:55a -- Governor Gray Davis is being urged to support a change in state law to lift restrictions preventing illegal immigrants from getting driver's licenses. The law was signed by former Governor Pete Wilson and, since 1994, has required a Social Security number and proof of legal status from everyone wanting a driver's license.

Members of Hermandad Mexicana Nacional marched outside the governor's office in Los Angeles Wednesday and delivered boxes filled with letters of support for the abolition of the legal resident requirement.

The group says about 2 million people have been denied licenses under the strict rules, and many still drive without the proper training or insurance.

The organization is supporting Assembly Bill 60, authored by Assemblyman Gill Cedillo, D-Los Angeles. The bill would require a passport or birth certificate as sufficient identification to obtain a driver's license.

The bill is in the Senate Appropriations Committee. Its future is uncertain, even if it makes it all the way to Davis's desk. The governor vetoed a similar bill last year. Davis said fraud was a concern if identification requirements are loosened.
