Man dies in backyard cesspool

HUNTINGTON, N.Y. (AP) -- A Long Island man died Monday when his backyard cesspool caved in and swallowed him, police said.

The Huntington man was standing on the ground above the cesspool -- a pit that collects waste from toilets and sinks -- when it gave way, police spokesman Officer Randy Jaret said.

Searchers located the man's body a few hours after the 12:40 p.m. incident but were unable to immediately remove it because the walls of the cesspool were crumbling, police said.

The man's identity was withheld. No other information was immediately available.
