Question on making herbal extracts

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Freedom! self reliance : One Thread

I would like to make extracts from the 2 echinacea and 1 valarian plants in my herb garden. I think I read that it's best to do this in spring. As we'll be moving in May, I was thinking I might do it now?? I wonder about using glycerin rather than alcohol, also. I'd rather use alcohol, but given my "recovered for many years" status, I better not:) I'd like to hear about any experiences you've had. I have a few good herb books, and I'm pretty clear on the procedure. Thanks!

Right now is a perfect time to do it. Root tinctures are best in the fall after the plant has died back because then the root contains all the energy the plant has stored away for the winter. Another alternative to using alcohol or glycerine is apple cider vinegar. I haven't tried making a vinegar tincture for these two specific herbs, but IMO vinegar is better than alcohol for herbs with a high mineral content such as nettles or a high mucilage content such as comfrey or marshmallow. Also, you may want to keep the valerian root away from any cats. It won't hurt them, but my three like it even better than catnip! Hope this helps.

Thanks Sherri, I'm glad I asked, and I'd forgotten about the cider vinegar. That's a great idea!
