Feeding the worms during the winter (Vermiculture (worms))

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Last year during the winter when fresh scraps were low, I resorted to using corn meal, powdered dog food and fish flake to winter the worms. This winter I will be able to keep them producing the same quality castings as they have all summer by feeding them the same stuff we use , dehydrated vegetables. All season while drying ours, I put a part of the process scraps on the bottom tray to dry as winter worm feed(at times my bins have been 75% produce scraps this season). This not only ensures winter worm rations, but keeps the forced air units from scorching our veggies. After everything dries, I package ours and run the scraps through a food processor to make feed mulch. I figure the veg mulch will produce better nutrients than just leaves and corn meal.

In the fishing Dept at wal mart you will find cans of worm food just for people who raise worms for fishing. I don't even think they thought about a women wanting the castings for her plants or we would see this in the garden section to. LOL
