What is the rule for this.... (Buying meat directly from farms in IL & WI)?

Hi. Can anyone please tell me if there is a law against buying already killed chicken,cow,hog from private farmers? I live in Zion,IL and would like to buy my meat from a local farmer.. I also need that info for Wisconsin also. Thanks,LisaK

it depends upon the state. You can check with the state ag department-I just recently did this-did it by email and found that here it is fine. But some states are not so accepting.

FWIW, I know in WI there are AMish who do chickens ala Salatin and don't have any problems-though just because they ar Amish doesn't mean they are not skirting the law :(

There is no law against it if you don't tell anybody about it, private treaty between two people is nobody elses business, but, don't even think of suing if you get sick from salmonella or other bacterial borne diseases, it is a risk you take purchasing this way!

Buy the chicken live from the farmer. then if he agrees to kill it and clean it for free, so be it. Check out Joel Salatin's books for the ultimate discussion of this type of selling.

Check with your local 4h as most have a auction once or twice a year were you can buy a animal and they do the processing, and it goes to kids for college money and almost all of it is tax deductable.

Don't know about elsewhere but the local meat processor will let you bring in a half side of beef for them to age, cut and wrap to your specifications. Same for hogs.
