Response to avocados

When I buy avacados at the grocery that aren't completely ripe, I put them on top of my washer in the laundry room that has a small window with frosted glass, for a couple of days. They "soften" just fine.

I have even found that they will ripen while in the fridge. Probably just takes longer than at room temp.

Pops,

I live on a two acre avocado ranch. Yeah, I know, ranch it ain't. But its enough for me. We raise Fuerte and Haas avocados. They all must be picked before they ripen. Thats why Haas can remain on the tree for up to a full year without falling off. We just leave them on the kitchen counter until they are soft. Or place them in a bag with an apple if you're in a hurry.

I used to work in a restaurant that made guacamole and crab-stuffed avocados. They used to put the avocados in a bin with flour or in a sack with flour to speed ripening.
