To anyone who shaves with a blade...

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unk's Wild Wild West : One Thread

Having shaved with a blade my entire shaving life, I have been through many different brands...I think I have tried them all. But nothing comes close to this new razor that has been sliding across my noggin the past few days, a Shick Extreme III. A triple blade, floating head wonder that absolutely glides across your face (or head) like nothing I've ever tried before. If you shave with a blade, you should try this one out, a bit pricey yes, nine and a half bucks for eight of them at Wal-mart, but worth every penny!

Sounds awesome Unk, but before I become concerned about shaving closer or more comfortably, I need somewhere to go.

I got a Gillette triple blade razor in the mail, and figured it was just another gimmick. Tried that thing and was amazed at how it shaved. I saw the Shicks at the store yesterday, and see that someone has one with diamond blades (so they say).

If the Shick is as good as the Gillette, it really gives you a close and comfortable shave. (And I hate to shave). One cartridge lasts for quite awhile.

Uh...this forum is dying

Dying? Maybe, but I still got one hell of a close shave!

That's funny Unk, because I got one in the mail--don't remember if it's Schick or Gillette. I tried it and hated it. I found the angle of the blade on the handle to be all wrong. Also, I don't much like the prospect of having three slices in my face when I cut myself. Two is bad enough. I'm sticking with the Trac II for now.

Gillette was sending out free samples of Mach III's in our area, so that maybe what you got in the mail. I thought I'd try it for a change from the Shick Tracer FX I had been using. I was also using the diamond blades with it, but I'm not sure it was really much of a difference. The thing with razors is that marketing is probably 75% of the product.

The Mach III is pretty good, but the problem I have with it is that it's really hard to get the hairs under one's nose. The Tracer FX did a much better job. I don't know if Shick's 3-blade version is the same as Gillette's, but maybe I should give it a go.

What about waxing? I haven't gone back to the razor.

Since I began to insist that my men use the Shick Extreme III, I no longer have whisker burn on the inside of my thighs.

Flintsghost

What do you mean dieing? this is the first good useful info I've gotten from here in a while. Keep it up folks. This is a lot better than the profanity wars.

Lorelei, insist that your men grow beards. Different experience.

-- helen (i@would.never.post.something.like.this), August 22, 2001.

Dear Helen, In a past life,my SO was bearded but when I married him he had just a thick 'tache which was very prickly when he trimmed it.So I suggested he grew a beard again. It was like kissing the dog..not something I do that often,I hasten to add.Did it tickle or what ? Our love life disintegrated because I couldn't stop laughing !

I'm curious now. SO uses one of those electric deals. How do those razors with triple blades work? Where [exactly] are the three blades located? My daughters [and now I] are pretty fond of the Gillette Custom Plus for Women with the Ultragrip Rubber Handle. It pretty much precedes the shave with a "moisture rich stip + aloe". It pivots [but sometimes when I don't want it to pivot], and is for sensitive skin. I used a depilatory before the girls "turned me on" to this shaver [and...um...still do for those more delicate areas.]

Still laughing...um...I wasn't referring to anything that might resemble "kissing a dog"...you know...

Helen, I'm shocked that you are even suggesting in your roundabout way what it is I think you are suggesting. Would this be a human beard or a Billy Goats beard? Just curious.

JBT, I pray you are not suggesting bestiality ...

Great subject, Unk. While I am a Mach3 fan, I picked this info up at Consumer Reports and thought I'd share it with you.

PRODUCT TEST

Details, details The Mach 3's head design can make it hard to shave under your nose and to trim sideburns.

The Mach 3 razor vs. the rest

We put the hype of Gillette's new triple-blade Mach 3 razor to a face test. Twenty-nine male staffers, some with beards or mustaches and some without, tried it at home against the Gillette Sensor Excel, the Schick Protector, and the Schick Tracer. The results:

Despite claims of "the closest shave ever in fewer strokes with less irritation," only one in three testers said they'd switch to the Mach 3.

While the Mach 3 scored excellent overall, including high marks for closeness of shave, ease of cleaning, lack of drag, and preventing cuts, so did the Sensor Excel. In fact, the Sensor Excel got the most votes for best overall razor. It's also cheaper than the Mach 3, which, at $6.72 plus $6.69 for a four-cartridge refill, was the most expensive of the bunch.

Some testers found it difficult or impossible to shave under their nose with the Mach 3 because of the razor's large head. Others found it tricky to trim sideburns or a beard because it's hard to tell where the blades meet the face.

The Schick razors weren't quite equal to the Gillettes, although both Schicks were deemed very good. The Protector, a twin-blade, wire- wrapped design that debuted last year, has a handle that was uncomfortable to some panelists.

Thank you, You@Must.Know. My conclusion exactly. I've tried those triple blade systems, and they do a good job, but for some reason I'm not happy with how the shave "feels."

I suspect that what the triple blade system has going for it by having three blades is offset by the necessarily larger size of the shaving head.

So far, the Senor Excel is the system I've been happiest with.
