Snake Killer

greenspun.com : LUSENET : A Village Commons : One Thread

I wish to report that I killed a copperhead this morning out by the barn. This was my first experience in snake killing. I didn't want him to get away so I decided that I didn't have the luxury of calling a neighbor to do the deed. Actually I killed & buried him all in one operation.

I killed it with a shovel. By the times I was convinced it was dead, I had chopped it up in little pieces in the dirt - hence killed & buried at the same time.

Sounds to me like you mulched him, Nancy. :)

Nancy, come to my house. There's a copperhead somewhere about that needs killin', needs killin' BAD!

I was working on the house and found it next to the house, all coiled up and staring at me.

"Go get me a shovel!" I exclaim loudly.

"Why?" sez the teenager.

"Because I need to kill that snake! Now hurry up!"

"Why bother? There are THOUSANDS of them around."

"Not right next to the house! Get the shovel!"

(Picture a strapping teenage boy ambling away, rolling his eyes)

"HURRY UP!"

(Picture the copperhead lazily uncoiling and sliding under the house, somewhere into the darkness ...)

Hired helper sez "Well, he's right, there ARE thousands of them around."

Me, fuming to myself - there may be a thousand of them around, but if he hadn't been so SLOW, there'd be 999 now.

So the menfolks around at the time all acted like I was a hysterical female, and were very lackadaisical about the snake. However, notice this has been some 3 or 4 months ago, and not one of them has volunteered in that time to get under the house and finish stapling up the hardware cloth to hold in the insulation in the last 8x8 section of flooring ...
