Turkeys in the snow

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Hello, I finally have turkeys in (Flagstaff) Arizona! They are doing wonderful with all this fine weather, but, looming in the near horizon is snow, ice and freezing temperatures. I have always let my turkeys free range, never having to worry about these winter elements in sunny Florida winters. So......what do I do about them in the winter here? Should I provide a heated turkey house? (husband will think I am pampering them!!) Let me know your thoughts on this please. In His Grace, Sissy

What breed do you have? The turkeys we raised were so stupid they would have drowned when it rained if we hadn't caught them and taken them in!!

Turkeys do fine in all weather. Ours sleep on our barn roof through blizzards and sometimes feet of snow. They look pretty bedraggled when they get going in the morning, but we haven't lost one to cold yet. Good luck.

Well, wild turkeys live through some pretty tough northern winters with no barn, no nothin'. So I expect their domestic cousins are pretty cold hardy as well. Most hardy poultry (and other domestic stock) can get by with a good draft free (this is important) area.
