Use of salt blocks in lieu of salt pellets to extend salt life (for water softener)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I am using a salt based water softener and am wondering if a block of salt can be used instead of using salt pellets which tend to be used up pretty quickly. I'll be looking up the manual to see if I can ease up on the salt usage in general, but am curious if it would operate just as efficiently and even more so if I used a block of salt. Thanks

We use block salt in our water softener and we like it better than pellets. The manual even recommends block versus pellets. To us it seems to last longer.
