chainsaw part discontinued

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

(Iowa) Using my small, electric Craftsman chainsaw last weekend, the (plastic) handle broke. Fortunately, noone was hurt. But of course, that meant hand sawing (ugh) to finish the project. Now, I need to replace the handle, which Sears tells me is unavailable because the model has been discontinued. (Model 315.34700; part 6-611367-00) about 25 years old. OK, it's old, but is used only every several years for trimming trees around the house, lots of life left in it, and just the right size for me to use. Does anyone know where I can get discontinued parts - specifically a handle- no, make that two? I'll be grateful for any suggestions. Thanks.

I know you want to keep your old saw but a new one is about $50. what will parts be if you can find them?

Could the handle be repaired? Since parts for your current saw are discontinued, I too would consider a new saw.

cheers,

People told you the facts. Shame to toss it, but brand new electric is under $50. I had to replace some rotting floor joists in crawl space under an old house on one job I did. This required leaving floor boards in place and cutting whatever solid wood left in joists right up to floor boards. Went out and bought a new electric saw to avoid gassing myself with my big saw. Did the job, but shortly after that fiber drive gear went kaput and chain wouldnt move. Went to dealer and he said IF he could get the part, it would be $35. Needless to say, I didnt fix it. You might go to few yardsales or auctions. Have seen used electric chainsaws sell for couple bucks at such places.

Thanks to all for the responses. Votes are, that I get to go shopping for a new saw. I really had no idea it would be so inexpensive to replace. Thanks to all for taking the time to reply. Now I know where to take all of my fix-it dilemmas!
