feeding rabbits sweet corn stalk

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I'm curios. In one of the recent forums it was mentioned that someone was feeding their rabbits corn stalk all winter long. I was wondering if you have to cut, dry, and store the stalks like you do hay? This would be great, cause I always have a lot of sweet corn stalks that I had always throwed on the compost pile, now I have a better use for it.

sounds like my response. All I do,, is when I feed then, ,I go to the garden and cut one , , then cut it up for the rabbits,, about 6 to 12 inches long,, its been dry, still standing. I do that,, about twice a week,, till its gone,, (usually the deer get it before I finish feeding it) Not all my rabbits gnaw on it,, cause its frozen usualy at this point. But most of them do,, at some point. IM in michigan,, so winter comes kinda early, and is mostly harsh. I dont see why you couldnt cut the stalkes and store in bunches.

I would think it would be better to cut the stalks ASAP after the last ear has been pulled off. Then store them out of the weather so they retain more of their quality than if left outside.
