Bayer to shed 4,000 workersBayer says it will axe 4,000 jobs over the next four years, on top of 2,000 lay-offs already imposed by the company last year.
Yesterday, Bayer said it had agreed with works councils in Germany not to reduce staff numbers up to the end of 2004 for operational reasons.
Bayer withdrew its Lipobay cholesterol-lowering drug two days ago because of safety concerns over a side-effect which caused muscle weakness. Last night, it announced 1,800 job losses and the closure of 15 plants following this move.
The German pharmaceuticals group forecast that the withdrawal of Lipobay would leave full-year profits "significantly below" its previous estimate of around £1.86 billion.
The company's UK base is in Newbury, Berkshire. It also has operations at Stoke Poges, Bridgend, Bromsgrove, Bury St Edmunds, Enfield, Malvern, Marlow, Halstead, Sudbury and Branston, Staffordshire.
Chairman Dr Manfred Schneider has warned that the withdrawal of Lipobay will have implications for the future development of the group.
Bayer hopes to achieve cost savings of £930 million a year by 2005. It is thought much of the impact will be felt in the US.

Spokane's technology sector continues to swoon as two more telecommunications companies announced layoffs this week.Alcatel, a Paris-based maker of telecommunications equipment, said it will cut a third of its staff in Spokane, or about 50 employees, over the next couple weeks, and World Wide Packets, a venture-backed start- up led by entrepreneur Bernard Daines, eliminated more than a dozen positions on Tuesday. The news follows layoffs of 200 employees at Telect Inc. last week. Telect -- a maker of fiber-optic cable connectors and distribution panels -- is one of the largest high-tech employers in Spokane County with 770 workers. It has cut 590 people in the region this year.

PITTSBURGH (Reuters) - No. 1 U.S. steelmaker USX-U.S. Steel Group (NYSE:X - news) said on Tuesday that it will close the majority of its remaining operations at its Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania, mills due to the impact of steel imports, cutting almost 600 jobs and taking a second-half charge.The company said it will shutter the rest of its cold rolling and tin mill operations at Fairless Works and cut almost 86 percent of its work force there by mid-November, with only the hot dip galvanizing operation surviving. The majority of the plant was shut down a decade ago.

NEW Y0RK (BestWire) - Citigroup Inc. recorded restructuring charges of $209 million in the second quarter, primarily for cutting back parts of its global corporate and global consumer businesses, according to a quarterly report filedwith the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
About $177 million is to cover costs of eliminating about 3,500 positions, of which about 2,150 relate to the United States. The rest of the charges are for asset impairment--$17 million--and for exiting leasehold and other contractual obligations--$15 million. These new initiatives are to be implemented over the next 12 months, said the company, which employs about 240,000 people around the world.

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Wireless technology giant Motorola Inc. (MOT) said on Wednesday it will close two semiconductor plants in Mesa, Arizona, over the next two and a half years, as it strives to turn around its money-losing chip unit.
The phaseout of the two plants will affect about 1,200 employees, most of whom will be transferred to other Phoenix-area plants, company spokesman Ken Phillips said.

St. Louis' Firstar centers may be hit hard by layoffs, according to published reports.
U.S. Bancorp said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that it will lay off 2,770 employees as a result of the merger between it and Firstar. The Associated Press reported that analysts predict banking centers in Minnesota, Wisconsin would be hit hardest, followed by St. Louis, Cincinnati and Portland, Ore.
Original layoff estimates were 1,750, and were increased to 2,500 in May.

(NYSE:A - news) said on Monday it would eliminate 9 percent of its work force and reported a third-quarter operating loss as it struggles to restructure its business.
Agilent reported a pro forma loss from continuing operations of $109 million, or 24 cents per share, compared to a profit of $158 million, or 34 cents per diluted share in the quarter a year ago.
Sales fell to $1.81 billion from $2.35 billion during the year-ago quarter.
The Palo Alto, California-based company said the job cuts -- of about 4,000 workers -- would be completed by the middle of next year.

Furniture maker Steelcase, Inc.Steelcase Inc. said Tuesday it plans to cut 900 to 1,110 jobs because of a sluggish economy and a weak furniture market. The nation's No. 1 office furniture maker also said its second-quarter earnings will be below expectations. LONDON (CNN) - Baltimore Technologies, a former stock market favourite of the new economy that has fallen on hard times, said it would cut hundreds of jobs.The Irish Internet security company plans to reduce its workforce to around 470 by the second quarter of 2002 from current levels of 1,100 staff. It aims to £72 million ($104 million) a year to help it return to profitability.

LISLE, Ill. — Telecommunications equipment maker Tellabs Inc. said on Wednesday it will cut about 12 percent of its work force, close two facilities and take a third-quarter charge as it moves to slash expenses amid reduced customer spending.The Lisle, Illinois-based company said it would cut 1,000 of its 8,400 jobs and close a manufacturing plant in Drogheda, Ireland and an office in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. The plant work will be consolidated at factories in Shannon, Ireland, and Espoo, Finland.

Telecommunications-equipment maker Lucent Technologies specified plans Thursday to reduce the company's work force by half. In a presentation to Wall Street analysts, the company clarified its previously announced layoff plans and said it will remove 17,000 more workers on top of the 10,500 workers already laid off and the 8,500 who chose to take early retirement.
Of the 17,000 on the chopping block, the company will cut 5,000 outsourced jobs and the remaining cuts will come from inside the company, which will bring the company's total number of employees to between 57,000 and 62,000 by March of next year. Lucent finished the year 2000 with 123,000 employees.

Reacting to a soft economy and seasonal slowdown, American Transportation warned on Tuesday that it could lay off more than 500 workers at its Conway school bus plant this fall unless demand improves.A layoff of 500 would represent more than 30 percent of the 1600 workers in Conway.
