Cordwood (Stackwood) homes

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Freedom! self reliance : One Thread

Ann and I are researching building a Cordwood home. Has any one seen both of Rob Roys videos ( Cordwood Homes and Cordwood techniques)? If so do you think one or the other is the one to buy, or should I get them both? We WILL be buying the complete book of Cordwood Masonry Housebuilding the Earthwood Method as well if that helps any.

Also any tips you have would be appreciated.

Thanks

Rick and Ann

I dont have anything useful to offer as to which is better but I did want to offer you this encouraging thought.

In my neckadawoots, there are still a good number of cordwood constructed structures. Many are in better shape than the log structures that were put up about the same time...When? Oh, 120-140 years ago.

Check out Daycreek.com

Site has a cordwood forum, a journal of the guy who owns the site and is building a cordwood home. There is a link to about five or six builders who have books for sale.

I would invest the $$ in attending one of their workshops. I attended one in WI last year and it was worth every penny!! It also gave the added bonus of meeting new people and the group discussions were invaluable. I am starting my house in the next few weeks. My daughter and I are building in northern WI.
