Is anyone familiar with the newly released PIANO DISCOVERIES method? If so, what's it like?

I've wondered the same thing. There are some well-known names associated with it, including Leon Bates and I believe Scott McBride Smith.

I met Janet Vogt at the MTNA National Convention in Washington D.C. this spring. I looked over her new series, Piano Discoveries, and found that I like the suggestions in the back of her theory books. I got a full set, and began using them with a beginner. I started with the on staff starter book.

I am tired of some of the harsh colors and features of some of the series I have been using. This series has nice pastels and seems to me to be more child oriented.

So far, I like it. I will continue to use it.

What age are your beginning students? Do you start even young beginners (ages 5-6) with on-staff notation? Just curious. I've found that the wee folks usually do better starting out with off-staff notation, but the older ones (ages 7+) do better starting with on- staff notation.

I've been told that the Piano Discoveries method has more classical repertoire in it than most (Praise God!) & more LH movement.

I scanned over a display my music store had. They are a positional method. And extreamly beautiful method backs. I don't think I have ever seen a more beautifully illustrated method book. I didn't purchase the book since I already had a stack of sheets and books and didn't want to go over my budget.

I recently attended a workshop given by Janet Vogt introducing the Piano Discoveries method and was thoroughly impressed. I have begun using this method and absolutely love the music and so do my students. This method has become one of my favorites to use along with Piano Adventures by Faber and Faber. I do prefer the learning format of the PA method but when I have siblings taking lessons from me, I will place one in the PA method and the other in the PD method.
