EOS 5 mirror return error

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

The failure characteristics are: 1. You know there is an internal failure when a empty battery symbol flickers on an empty display. Note that the battery is fresh. 2. The reason for this error message is that the mirror not is returning after a shoot. When you shoot the mirror tips up, the curtain opens and closes, but then the display is turning of only showing a flickering empty battery symbol. 3. To normalize the camera, a second press on the trigger button is necessary. 4. Note that all functions operate perfect, and the mirror slides smooth in its trace.

I really hope that somebody can help me out here, even though I see a fairly expensive service is comming up.

This sounds like the dreaded 3rd party (Sigma, Tamron, etc.) lens incompatibility problem. Were you using a non-Canon lens? Does this happen every time, or only intermittently?

Other than Geoff's idea (which has a very good chance of being right), the other things to try is: 1) Another new battery of a different brand (Really, sometimes it works), 2) Clean the battery contacts on both the battery and in the camera, 3) Clean the lens contacts on both the lens and the camera body (use a pencil eraser, but don't get any dust into the camera), 4) Try another lens, even if it is a Canon.

Do you know yet whith is the problem??

I have a similar problem with my EOS50. To restore the mirror position i must swith off and swith on again, the second press on the trigger button does not work. I use only Canon objetives.

It could be a camera problems because it only works right the first four or five rolls with each battery and after that, it starts failing more and more. I have had this problem with two half used batteries and a new one from Panasonic. It was in a hot and humidity country so it still could be only a battery problem. This weekend i will test the camera with new batteries and the batteries in another camera (EOS3).
