fly control (around) hogs

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

anyone know of an effective way to control flies around hogs? We have 2 feeders in a pen that I pick up after every day, still there are hordes of flies. Or shouldnt that be a problem for them, they dont seem to be bothered too much by them. Thanks for your help!

Response to fly control by hogs

Someone a while ago now posted a piece that said guinea fowl had cleaned up the flies around their hog pen. Of course, this assumes that you can stand having guinea fowl, and that your guinea fowl stay faster than the pigs.

try either diatomaceous earth or raising the hogs in winter, we use the d.e. on our goat pens outside especially when it gets wet and mucky, and it does seem to cut down on the flies, we have much less this year. we get it thru a goat supply house but there's also suppliers on the internet. we bought our little pig in september and raised it fine in a hutch thru the cold winter, i don't remember how much snow we got that year but no flies! if we didn't have to raise a pig for the fair as a 4-h project we would stick to winter pig keeping.
