Anyone interested in selling their 70-200 2.8L?

-- Derrick Morin (dmorin@oasisol.com), August 01, 2001.

Yes: IT HAS IS WITH TRIPOD STABILIZATION!!! I'm very happy. I very much hope tripod-capable IS is now becoming standard for new IS releases, and it looks like that is the case. The upgrade to the IS system with a claimed additional stop (to 3) sounds promising also.

Thanks for posting the press release, "Mr. Bugger"! ***

MSRP: $3000 US

Current 70-200 2.8L lists at 2300 and sells on B&H (US) for 1200. If the ratio holds the same, street price should be around $1550 (US).

Rod: I suspect you may be a bit low on that projected street price. I'm guessing it will be street priced at around $2000.00-$2200.00. We shall see.

You are probably closer to the mark on the price, alas!

Question: Does anyone know if this lens handles panning in IS? The press release makes no mention of panning or Type II IS, (unless I missed it in there.)

Eran's posting (thanks,Eran!) answered my question.

The EOS mag site has specs

http://www.eos-magazine.com/News_28_EF70-200ISUSM.html

Here's what it says for IS:

Image stabilization: Mode 1: normal; Mode 2: stabilization in one direction only (for panning shots)

Kurt may be closer to the correct price, but keep in mind it will come with the lens hood, as well as all those fancy weather seals & IS!

Has anyone spoken with a human being who actually knows when the lens will arrive on shelves? I've tried several mail order houses and local pro shops -- they were all clueless (to the point of not even knowing that Canon had plans to release such a lens. Tsk, tsk...this a week after the official company annoucement)!

Has anyone seen/heard any actual hands on reviews of the lens? I read a disturbing rumor that the optics weren't quite up to the non-IS lens, on a French web-site.

Parlez-vous francais? Bien, voyez a Chasseur d'Images:

En France c'est seulement 20.000f ! ($US 2,790)

Prix de la rue probable: 19.990F (!) (Est. Street Price $US 2,788 !)

Page shows Photograph of lens and optical element diagram. Belle!

Weight listed 1.57 kg = 3.46 pounds. Just over a half-pound heftier than non-IS!

(Non-IS spec'd at 1.31 kg = 2.88 pounds at canon eurpopa)

Re: Mr. Morin's first response on this thread: as of now there are about half a dozen 70-200 2.8 L (non-IS) on Ebay!
