recipe for skunk odor removal on dogs

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

since we've had a couple of disscussions on skunks thought I'd post this mixture for the unfortunete dog and owner who's had an encounter: And yes it does a good job but there is still the lingering odor if the dog gets wet: 1 cup each of Hydrogen Peroxide , Baking Soda and White Vinegar plus enough warm water to get the dog thoroughly wet. Protect the dogs eyes with a drop of mineral oil in each(should do this when you bath a dog anyway). Bath dog with a good shampoo. sponge on above solution. Leave it on for 5 minutes. Lightly rinse. Repeat if needed. Check the dogs eyes thoroughly, they can be damaged by skunk spray. If the dog is sprayed in the face, a Vet should be consulted quickly.

We had a dog that got sprayed a couple of years ago, and tried every home remedy we could find to no avail. We finally went to the vet and got a product called "skunkoff" and it worked absolutely GREAT! I am glad to hear about this more natural remedy, however. Thanks for posting it! Hope I NEVER have to try it! :-)

Hey just a fun story about a skunk. we were taking a walk down the lane with our dog sam and a cat following a long behind which i felt sorry for and picked up half way down our lane. then we went out on the road for a longer walk it was a little after dusk and we were walking a long when we saw sam fighting a poor little kitty (so we thought) we went running and yelling at the dog and we then relized that it was no poor little kitty it was a skunk. we had to run 1/4 mile home with our dog chasing us thinking it was a fun game. i had the cat tucked under one arm running hard and the cat was bouncing all over the place. i think i bounced it to hard cause poop was running and smearing all over the side of me. when we got home i striped off my shirt and ran in teh house. mom desided that i was already smelly and nasty (some soaked though) sent me out with a half vinagar and water salotion to spray the dog (she didn't want to waste tomato juice on the 80+lbs. dog). i was in my bra at this time chaseing the dog who was running from tree to tree trying to "rub" off the smell. it worked very well and was a very fun night NOT!!! although the vinigar and water worked well she used equal parts of each.

1 Qt Hydrogen Peroxide
1/4 C. Baking soda
1 tsp. liquid soap Mix up fresh, Hydrogen peroxide isn't stable.

Wouldn't the hydrogen peroxide cause the hair of a dark colored animal to turn blonde?

No, this is the hydrogen peroxide you buy at WalMart for putting on cuts. The peroxide that bleaches is a much stronger concentration.
