Hi, I am working on research for a documentary on the Tenderloin. I am trying to find out when people started reffering to the area in S.F. as the Tenderloin. I also ned infor on the area in the late 1800's and early 1900''s. Thanks

Tenderloin apparently refers to the choice cut of meats available to the cops assigned to the area. The police are/were vital to the economics of bootleg whiskey and prostitution.I understand New York also referred to similar areas as Tenderloin.
Good Luck in your research.

I've heard that story too. I think it was in NY first, then SF. I know there was a large cemetary in that area before 1900. Maybe that's why it has a 'heavy fib.' I've seen a map of the cemetary somewhere. Craig....
