What is the best way to bust up concrete?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Freedom! self reliance : One Thread

I'm remodeling a mobile home. The fellow that owned it before me did some pretty extensive remodeling....did it pretty badly too. For some reason he put either concrete or grout 2 inches thick in the bathroom floor. I've got to remove this. Best case scenario...after I finish ripping out one wall I'll be able to get a prybar under it and take it out more or less in one piece. Of course best case scenarios never seem to happen with me.....so I need some ideas of how to rip this stuff out and not end up with me and the floor laying on the ground.

Hey Mandybelle! I think ya'll made a double negative! Methinks ya'll AND the floor will end up on the ground!!! LOL. Probably particle board flooring [pressed sawdust] and it will come apart I imagine. Be careful tho. Fallin through the floor will bark a skinny lag. I know--been there done that! My suggestion? Use a small hammer [abut a 4#'r] and bust small pieces up--very gently--and pry those small pieces out to remove. Best to remove in small pieces so ya'll don't tear up waterlines/drainlines under the house.

Let us know how it goes! If'n I could--Lil Dumplin and I would "motor" down ya'lls way and have a "look see". We've done this kinda stuff before! Old hoot gibson. Matt.24:44

Any hardware store sells a little metal wedge that is used specifically for busting up concrete in small places. All the ones I have seen weigh about two pounds or so and are painted blue. Give it a whack with the hammer and good-bye concrete floor.

good luck

A jackhammer with a "bull prick" will break it up in no time.
