Source of seed for soybean hay

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

An earlier post someone asked about buckwheat for hay.Back in the early forties, if my dad didn't get the cash crops in on time we planted buckwheat or a special soy bean for hay.Although I don't remember the results .I have searched the internet to see if there is still a hay soy bean but have found only limited info.Does anyone know if this is still available.Keith Etheridge Illinois

soybean for hay? I havnt heard of that,, and most of the farmers around here grow soy. Never thought about what they do with the leaves, stems, ect. I know soy meal is fed to cattle,, thats mostly husks and such.

When I was in high school, I worked for a farmer who raised bean hay. I think he used ordinary soybean seed, planted with a drill and mowed before the bean matured (green). Heaviest and stemmiest hay I've ever dealt with.
