3 Unrelated Power Outages Occur Early Wednesday Morning

Impacts Queens and Manhattan's Lower East Side, Upper West Side

Outages Come In the Midst of a Heat Wave

(NEW YORK) (WCBS) Power is back Wednesday morning after three unrelated outages in Queens, the Lower East Side and the Upper West Side of Manhattan left several buildings without electricity overnight in the midst of a summer heat wave.

The three isolated outages happened at about 11 p.m. Tuesday night in Queens and Manhattan and continued until early Wednesday morning.

A Con Ed spokeswoman says the power outages were isolated and unrelated.

The outage in the Sunnyside section of Queens affected six buildings near 43rd Avenue and 45th Street because of a fire that caused several manholes covers to explode in the air.

A Fire Department spokesman says 60 firefighters put the fire out by about 1 a.m. Officials say they're not sure what caused the fire.

Con Ed says that the outage on the Lower East Side affected nine city housing buildings on Madison Street.

The third outage, at 82nd Street and West End Avenue, affected six buildings on 82nd Street and one building on West End Avenue.

Both Manhattan power outages were caused by burnt out cables, reports CBS 2's David Diaz.

No injuries have been reported, although residents were forced to deal with sweltering heat without air conditioning.

The outages came in the midst of a summer heat wave that has brought temperatures in the 90s along with high humidity. For a second day in a row, forecasters are predicting a heat index in the triple digits for parts of the New York region Wednesday.
