DETROIT, July 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Hot, humid weather prompted Detroit Edison customers to use a record amount of electricity in the hour ending at 2 p.m. today.

The record-setting hourly usage was 11,288,000 kilowatts (kW) of electricity. The previous record of 11,018,000 kW was set June 10, 1999.

The all-time company electricity usage record today was preceded by a record amount of electricity used on a Sunday. Detroit Edison customers yesterday used 9,513,000 kW during the hour ending at 6 p.m., eclipsing the previous record of 9,191,000 kW, set July 4, 1999.

Detroit Edison has adequate supplies of electricity to meet its customers' needs this summer. The utility in December forecasted a peak demand of 12,375,000 kW in Southeastern Michigan this summer, a 10 percent increase from the peak last summer, which was cooler than normal. Detroit Edison's plan to meet record demand calls for a total of 13,071,000 kW of supply resources to be available this summer, including a 15 percent reserve margin to cover unexpected power supply limitations
