planting fall peas : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Can anyone tell me the best time to plant fall peas? I live on the Northern Ohio/Pennsylvania border about 1 hour from Lake Erie. This will be my first year planting peas for fall.

Tiffani, not sure about the peas. I would guess once the weather has cooled down some. Where are you located? I think I might live near you.

I would suggest first of August would be a good time. You may have to keep them well watered. Here in Oklahoma there is a very narrow time window to plant and harvest a fall crop. There doesn't seem to be enough time between the summer drought and the first fall frost to grow a good crop. Therefore we have to plant while it is still hot and dry and use a lot of water.

You might find it advantageous to provide shade to the new seeding to drop the soil temperature a few degrees in order to increase germination and seedling survival.
