bushel basket (do they really hold a bushel?)greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread |
Can someone tell me if the old round baskets made of thin wooden slats that Grandma always referred to as a "bushel basket", is really a bushel? I have one and it doesnt look like its big enough to hold a bushel of anything. Would someone please give me the measurements for one so I can see if what I have is really a "bushel basket". And does anyone know where you can purchase a new one these days?

http://www.basketfactory.cc/bushel.htm These people sell them, and there are dimensions given. Maybe you have a half bushel?

A standard US bushel is 4 pecks or 8 gallons. It measures about 2150 cubic inches or 1.25 cubic feet. You could measure your basket by using beans, or any dry material and a peck bucket or gallon jug.

Assuming you meant the basket was 17½" across (diameter), and treating it as a cylinder, I get about 1¾ cubic feet, so it would certainly be possible.
