What are your touchstones/memory-triggers?

Kymm's entry today about missing her dad reminded me about how I'm often reminded of people I miss (some because of death and some because of distance) by a particular food or activity or phrase that I've come to associate with them - often something fairly insignificant to everyone (including the individual in question) but me. For instance, when I encounter taramasalata (a Greek fish spread) in restaurants, I invariably remember going to Greektown with my friend Dan. When I hear "I bought me a cat" I remember a bass I had a crush on in high school who sang it as an encore in a voice recital. Whenever I reread Kathleen Woodiwiss' "Rose In Winter" I remember the olive-green library copy I devoured on the sly when I was 15 or 16. Etc

And you?

Music triggers most of my reverie. I remember my mother's memorial service when I hear 'I will remember you'-Sarah Maclaughlin, I remember driving to the beach on Sunday's with my high school sweetheart when I here Pearl Jam's 10 album, Mazzy Star usually breaks my heart, and Beastie Boys always make me smile. Smells often trigger strong memories, usually of a time period instead of a specific event. Kiwi lipgloss reminds me of being nineteen and responsibility free.
