E-TTL is functional with the EX series flashes. I dont know if when you said 550 you mean a 550EX. i dont think the A2 does E-TTL anyway, though.

The A2 is not capable of E-TTL. It is capable of A-TTL, but the 550EX is only capable of E-TTL, TTL, and manual. The 550EX will work fine in TTL or manual mode on the A2, but if you do not intend to upgrade to a newer camera body, the 540EZ may be a better choice. The only real advantages the 550EX has over the 540EZ are its E-TTL compatibility with newer cameras, and its wireless capability.

1) To use E-TTL you need both a body capable of using E-TTL and a flash capable of using E-TTL.

The A2 is an older camera, and cannot use E-TTL since E-TTL didn't exist when it was released. Therefore any E-TTL- compatible flash used with your A2 will revert to TTL or A-TTL operation.

2) There's no such thing as a Canon Speedlite 550EZ flash. You're probably thinking of the Speedlite 550EX, which does have E-TTL. (that's what the X designation means)

The older Speedlite 540EZ flash does not have E-TTL.
