Ford may order work stoppage in Brazil
Associated Press
SAO PAULO, Brazil -- Hit by an energy crisis and slower sales, Ford Motor Co. on Friday prepared to join the ranks of other car makers in Brazil by suspending production at its main plant for 10 days, a workers' representative said.
The company planned to send 3,500 workers home on paid leave from the plant at Sao Bernardo do Campo between July 23 and Aug. 1, said Teolinio Monteiro da Costa, a workers representative at the plant.
He estimated that would mean a loss of production of about 6,850 vehicles, as the plant normally produces 685 cars and light trucks a day.
Ford officials wouldn't comment.
