Hi everyone, on sesame st. one day ( on the tv). I saw a little farm that had small chickens that layed tinted eggs with brown spots. I believe that it might have been in Mexico or South America??? I would love to have some chickens that lay spotted eggs. I have some Araconas and white layers and brown layers I mix them all up and sell them and they are so preety that way. I thought it would be neat to have a lot of different types of eggs. If anyone knows the name of chickens that lay spotted eggs or that have diferent colored eggs I would appreciate the info. Lisa

Hi Lisa: Here is some info on a few tinted egg laying birds. As far as spotted eggs, I'll have to let someone else answer that as I don't have any idea...

Most likely the chickens that lay tinted eggs are Araucanas. They are a South American chicken that doesn't have any tail (rumpless) and are known for blue eggs. There are a few here in the US but now to many. Other choices for colored eggs would be Ameraucanas. They come in several color patterns and are more widely found in the US. They have ear muffs and beards and lay greenish-blue eggs. Yet, another choice would be to try Easter Egger chickens. Basically Easter Eggers are anything that is hatched from a tinted shelled egg. Some may have tufts and beards, some not. They aren't a breed per say, just some interesting chickens.

Trisha, Thanks for the info. I have americanas, I was reasently told by the hatchery that Auracanas were Ameracanas. They said that they had been calling them Auracanas, when they should have been calling them Americanas.But you are telling me that they are really 2 diferent breeds. I have a cochin hen who lays brown eggs with white speckles on them. Not really a breed characteristic, since I have another cochin who lays plain brown ones, so I think it may just randomly happen in certain he

One of my aracaunas lays real pretty blue eggs with spots. yes, she is a real aracauna, rumpless. :-) I do have some ameracanas too. NO roosters though, they were so mean!! They would run up to anyone who came in the yard and jump on them. They have a pen, but would dig out underneath it. So...I just got rid of them. I didn't plan on having any hatch anyway. I got my true aracaunas from Ideal Poultry.

Aracaunas are rare and only sold by private breeders. Those sold by hatcheries are really Easter Eggers.

I am sure I will want some. rogo do you know were I can get some auracanas, i got my americanas from Ideal I dont think that they have auracanas but I will find out. Thanks lisa

Some of those Easter Eggers will give a throw-back by giveing you a rare rumpless one. There is also another rumpless bird that lays colored eggs called Manx Rumpies (poor layers). I might be wrong about the eggs, but they are rumpless, small, & in need of improvment as there is supposed to be variable color & comb. Sand Hill Preservation Center 1878 230th st, Calamus, Ia. 52729; has them in small amounts. I can't help with spotted eggs (from chickens) unless you are willing to have Ancona ducks. Both the ducks & their eggs are spotted (also from Sand Hill).

Hi Lisa, Im going to check those tinted brown eggs out. I am going to build a coop this summer I'm excited to get my chickens. I dont now what kind I'm going to get ,but I want pink, green ,and blue eggs. Hopefully maybe you now of any pretty chickens that lay those kinds of eggs and that are very cute when babies also nice. I will try to get back to you in a week or so with the egg stuff and give you the info. Or else I will have to see about school work (you no how busy that gets.)
