Can anyone tell me the fastest and best way to get rid of tree stumps?

Two ways I have used are : soaking the stump in vegetable oil and then starting a bag of charcoal burning on top with a cut out metal drum over it as a chiminey. When the stump burns down, flush it with water to extinguish any root coals. The other way is to prep it to raise mushrooms on if its hardwood. Seed it with spores and cover it with brush and grass to keep it dark and keep it moist. Within two seasons, it will be decayed.

Jay,,I never even thought about using it to grow mushrooms,, what a great idea. Does the sstumps have to be any particular size?

Stan, The one we seeded with mushrooms was about 2 ft in diameter and hardwood. I guess you could seed them with known edible varieties, but my only interest was the decay of the stump so I transplanted growth from decaying timber in the woods behind our house that may or may not have been edible and let them feed on the stump. After two seasons the stump was crumbly and easy to dispose of with shovel and turning.

soak well with salt water and let the deer do the rest

The bigger ones a barrel will not fit over to burn them so I took the cabinet of an old clothes dryer and removed the insides and back. Flop it over on its back over the stump. The dryer door is where you put in the wood for the fire. Also need a vent hole 6 inches or so and enough space around bottom for air to enter. After a days fire if still some stump left I take an axe and chop off all the chared wood down to new wood and fire her up again. Got a big one out of a new road in no time.

My son came in the house and said mom I poured my old transmission fluid over that old stump. I don't know why he did it other than I am always telling him not to pour that car stuff on the ground!! anyway it was a big old maple stump. Well in a couple of weeks mushrooms were all over it and within a year the thing just decayed into the ground. I don't know if it was a fluk or what but it was nice having that big old stump gone out of the middle of the yard. The other one that was half the size next to the fence is still there and strong as ever. We cut down the two trees at the same time 3 years ago. They would loose branches across our power lines every winter in the snow.

Fastest way is probably a stump grinder.

I had big stump in the yard and I put compost pile over it. It took about a year to get rid of it, Not fast but it was easy. I also like the mushroom idea.
