I am in NY State too ! What do you want beef or milk cows ? How many , any special breed? Read the archives , they will give you lots of info .Your best bet may be to hang out at auction or find an old farmer who loves to talk .Good luck .

Hi, Joy. Cow prices have been way up for the past few months and may continue to be for some time. A lot of this is because of the foot and mouth disease problem that the UK has had, along with the BSE problem they have had there and in Europe as well. Both of those disasters tightened up the beef market in the US, and when that happens, it follows through into the dairy cow market as well. Young heifer calves have been selling in the several hundreds of dollars range lately, and bred heifers have been extremely high. A private sale of a herd in Evans Mills, NY (Patty will know where that is :) averaged $1400, which included the cull cows as well. Those are sky high prices! It's a tough time to get into dairy cows right now.

As far as cow health, Patty is right when she says read the archives here. Lots of stuff on cows. :) I've never looked for web sites for cow health, but they must be out there. Checking the Land Grant college sites (Cornell Univ., etc.) might help.

Does any one have a ball park idea how much a Jersey, Gurensey or mix of the two is going for (bred)in the Western Virginia area? How about Nubian dairy goats? Thanks!
