Switching goats from milk replacer to cow store milk

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Can someone tell me whether or not it is safe to switch a 6 week old wheter to Vit. D cows milk from the store if he has been drinking UniMilk for 5 weeks. We have just made it through and bout with bloat and then diahreah...he is fine now but I am leary about switching him at this point even though the cows milk is better for him. Seems like a risky time to upset his stomach again if it would do that. Thanks CBA

Last November i had a doe kid whose mother rejected her. She neede dmore milk as the dam had already kidded that Feb. i had to do something as my goats were dry. i gave her milk from the store and she was fine. but before I would do this you may try giving her some probios to even out her rumen. i think Vicki mentioned you can add baking soda to their bottle if necessary.

..........and do the switch ever so gradually...adding a bit of the whole cow's milk to the replacer a little at a time, until it's a complete formula of cow's milk. Good luck! :)patty Prairie Oak Miniatures http://www.minifarm.com/prairie_oak
