On a low budget, have a look at used Nikon Series E lenses. The 28mm, 100mm and 135mm (especially 100 and 135mm) are good lenses and cost a lot less than the Nikkor counterparts. A manual focus Nikkor 50mm F1.8 is so cheap that it is a much better buy than the Series E.

Louis:

Being on a budget is a real problem. The realization that the AI and AIS lenses [particularly the AI] are physically much better made has driven up the prices of used lenses. Many are as expensive, used, as the D series, new. That said, let's go on;

I have all of the focal lengths from 18 mm through 180mm. The outstanding lens is the 105 mm f/2.5. I use mostly Leica M equipment in 35 mm, but this Nikon lens is the best lens that I own. On the wide angle side, the 24mm f/2.8 that I have has worked very well. I use the 35 mm f/2 a lot for flash work for PR publication. All of them are OK. Just figure out what focal length you want and what you can afford. I have some D series lenses and they are very good, but, for manual focus, they aren't so good, IMHO.
