Um...that would be faithless...the first pass was correct, but once rejected, I suppose I lost faith in the second pass being honored. [and the dog ate my homework, etc.] Heh.

Anita,

The only time I've seen that word used was in a series of fantasy novels by Stephen R. Donaldson "The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant." I like to consider myself well read, but with this guy, I needed to keep a very thick dictionary handy at all times. Even more so than with the writings of our own Mr. Decker (tip o' the hat, Ken, Jose, whatever). Turns out Donaldson wrote the novels while working on an English M.A. Showing off to his Professor, perhaps?

I'm not complaining; the novels were fun, and it's amazing the amount of meaning that can be crammed into a single word.

Anita--do you know the song "Perfidia"?

PERFIDIA

Jimmy Dorsey

-------------------

To you my heart cries out "Perfidia,"

For I found you, the love of my life,

In somebody else's arms

Your eyes are echoing "Perfidia,"

Forgetful of our promise of love,

You're sharing another's charms

With a sad lament, my dreams

Have faded like a broken melody;

While the gods of love look down and laugh

At what romantic fools we mortals be

And now I know my love was not for you

And so I'll take it back with a sigh,

Perfidious one, good-bye.

Hello Anita,

This is a word seldom used, but stinging when it is, especially in our OZ political circus. Another word to describe our performing political animals is pusillanimous, a state of their spirit when they have none. Both these two words have popped up lately and noone needs to wonder why that is so.

WOW Lars, I had that very same thought!

I do, however, prefer Glenn Miller's version. Of course, I prefer Glenn Miller's version of just about every old song there is. LOL.

Well, lookyhere. "Spincock'" showed up again again.

"Spincock", look in the mirror, and see what a putrid reflection you have:

http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Studio/2064/covenant.html

".. whereas readers willing to immerse themselves, and readers who don't mind dark, even apocalyptic stories, enjoy them."

You enjoy these books because like you, they have a decayed, rotten, spoiled core, "spincock". You so strongly resemble the protagonist in some regards, I swear Donaldson was writing about you....

"The Chronicles are unique in that not only is the plot dark and extremely lacking in cheer, but also in that for most of the series, the protagonist and title character is a mentally unstable, dislikable wimp."

Substitute the name of your mental illness for "leprosy" in the paragraph below, and the writer has you pegged to a "T".

"He suffers from leprosy, and with that disease comes social neglect (even active persecution) and the psychological distress that results from such. As a result, the series offers a unique, intriguing glimpse into the mind of an outcast"

Like you, "Covenant is a character of extremes".

Not many mirrors unshattered in your home, eh?

Anita--do you know the song "Perfidia"?

No. Then again, Jimmy Dorsey and Glenn Miller were never on my list of preferred entertainers.

Ah, the world of language. I enjoy the dulcet tones of Spanish, the subtle nuances of French and the precision of German. English has its charms, particularly in the prose of a master wordsmith. Does anyone else rue the loss of Latin? And of all the languages, why does English make verb conjugation so difficult? Gracias, Senor "Spin." I cannot speak for Senor Decker, but I imagine he would be equally grateful.

How sad. Big Band/Swing music is excellent listening.

Perfidia has been recorded by many artists, some quite modern. Many recordings are in Spanish.

-- Lars (larsguy@yahoo.com), July 12, 2001.

IMO, there are few more romantic experiences than dancing outside on a sultry night with someone you love to a good band playing Miller's arrangement of Moonlight Seranade.

You know, Lars, I'm not partial to Miller - but you may very well be right. Thanks for the image.
