Hyper Olympic - Long Jump oddities

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MAME Action Replay : One Thread

Since I play this game with MAME I never ever managed to jump 9m72 but only (and many many times) 9m67. I'm now starting to think that this cannot always be due to my ineptitude. For the record, I always play the Hyper Olympic version of the game (romname: hyprolym) because that was the name of the game in the arcades where I would go (I'm Italian) and where I did manage to jump 9m72.

In his amazing top score game (95930 pts), Tommi Tiihonen's efforts in this event were:

1st jump: 9m18 (1385 cm/sec + 43°) 2nd jump: 9m72 (1397 cm/sec + 42°) Note that his speed was 1367 cm/sec: when he took off the board he got additional 30 cm/sec.

In a game I did (not the one which is in 2nd position on this site) and of which I have an .inp file (in case someone wants to see it), my efforts were:

1st jump: 9m18 (1405 cm/sec + 43°) 2nd jump: 9m67 (1425 cm/sec + 42°) Note that I too got plus 30 cm/sec when I took off the board, meaning that Tommi's jump and mine were identical in the first part, only I was faster. How is then possible that my jump was inferior? Is the difference due to the fact that he played Track & Field while I played Hyper Olympic (this seems absurd to me, anyway)?!?

Well,well...

MKL, Hyper Olympic I played at arcade was same as mame-Hyper Sports, the logo was exactly same as in hyprolym or hyprolyb.

Indeed, there might be some difference between various romsets of T&F. Funnily my record at hyprolym LJ seems to be only 9,67 too, but I've not played that romset much. I just tested it with a speed up cheat, and got 0,72(10,72), that should prove the case in favour of 9,72 being max at hyprolym! On a good day I can jump multiple 9,72's. Last time I played trackflc (a week or two ago), I got on second jump 9,72 and right on third 9,67. This proves in my opinion that 9,72 IS the maximum length. Otherwise third jump would have been something like 9,68 or 9,73 or 9,78! It was the kind of jump(perfect)that gives 9,72 or 9,67.

How to get 9,72: At arcade we allways thought that if you make a perfect jump(enough speed+42angle right on the line), you get about 2 times of 3 9,67 and one will be 9,72. I believe that to get 9,72 you have to get just exact spot on the line(or maybe little over, depends on view)- if you get 9,67 it just looks the same, but it isn't same, you just can't see the difference because it's so small.

We also noticed that if you get a speed little over 1400(something like 400-440?)you don't get 9,72!!!!!!. The speed you need is about 1350-1400 and 1450-1500 This is propably where you're going wrong.

When you step on the line, you get some extra speed, was it 20-50? Yeps, at my record I got +30 speed stepping on the line, but I'll upload now a game (just to confuse you more)in which I jump 9,63 and get +50. Maybe it's only 9,63 because speed is right in the unwanted gap 1400-1450...Or maybe there is difference between romsets.

hehe, this is really weird post to majority here, even for me...

Ciao,

Hi Tommi,

First of all, congrats for your latest hi-scores. I wonder if I'll ever be able to do the same...

Also, thanks for your info about the 1400-1450 gap: I really didn't know anything about that!

However, I can't follow you when you say "Hyper Olympic I played at arcade was same as mame-Hyper Sports, the logo was exactly same as in hyprolym or hyprolyb.". It makes no sense to me: Track & Field is just the American name of Hyper Olympic and Hyper Sports is the "sequel" to the latter.

Thanks for the praises MKL. After I read my previous post, I wasn't sure if anyone understood anything in it.

Here in Finland Track&Field was labelled in marquee+in intro screen (logo)stood "Track&Field". I never saw the game in Italy(or it was with joystick, and I ignored it, being a buttonist myself:)

The sequel(hyperspt)I played had logo that said "Hyper Olympic". That romset is not in mame yet. The logo is same, but game is different. I have a strange flashback though, that I've seen a hypersports game where stood "Olympiakisa" as a logo, in Finnish...

Generally marpers think that it's most valuable to own the highest score in "parent romset" ie original one. Look, and you'll find that many of the best players submit only for the original roms. This is when gameplay is similar concerning all romsets, there are exeptions as Scramble etc. I personally find it sometimes as a challenge to "own" the game totally, having 1st places in all roms. The downfall is that you might not get in the book (TG) if you slip a good score using a clone...

I have the arcade game Hyper Olympic at home, and have got 9.72m on four or five occasions.I found the only way to get it was with 1250 speed (or thereabouts)exactly on the line and an angle of 42degrees.I have had jumps of 9.67 and even 9.71(very frustrating)but they generally had more than 1250 speed. Hope this helps, guys

Dear guys.. I readed a lot about this hyper olympic , and I tried some cheats because I wanted to understand which were the limits of the game. I can confirm you that whit a speed of about 1450-1500 the jump often is worst instead of 1300-1350. My personal limit is 9,66 whit a 45 angle and a speed of 1346 hi
