Sound setting on Rebel II

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

Just bought a Rebel II for my daughter. The control wheel has a setting that has a 'loudness control" (?) with a musical note. The manual that came with the camera does not reference this setting. Can anyone help?

Thanks

One of the amazingly useful features of the Rebel II is the ability to play stupid little tunes during self-timer operation. It was such a useful feature, in fact, that Canon never continued the feature to any other camera. Your daughter's camera is fabulous rarity!

Well. Maybe not super-rare. The Rebel II (EOS 1000N outside North America) and its flash-equipped sibling, the Rebel S II (EOS 1000FN) sold fairly well, I guess.

Anyway. To set the self-timer tunes turn the left-hand (looking from the rear) command dial to the speaker setting. Then rotate the (index finger) main control dial until the number in the top deck LCD changes. (you may need to try moving either direction) 1 is a plain beep and settings 2 through 4 are various tunes by Vivaldi and Bach and Beethoven.

To use the timer set the command dial to the timer icon (looks like a clock) and press the shutter release. Note that the timer mode is the same as P mode with the 10 second timer. There's no way to operate the camera in, say, Av mode with a timer.

Other features of the Rebel II/Rebel S II/EOS 1000N/EOS 1000FN:

The round rear button on the right does Partial metering, which I think is about 8.5% around the centre focus point - the area outlined in the viewfinder.

Both AF (autofocus) start and AE (autoexposure) lock are tied to the shutter release being pushed halfway.

The left-hand rear button (oval) is a shift function for the control dial. In P, Av, Tv and DEP modes, this oval button allows for control of exposure compensation. In M mode, the dial controls shutter speed, with the oval button controlling aperture.

Pushing the two rear buttons together simultaneously sets the multiple exposure count (1 to 9). This allows you to take multiple photos without winding to the next frame, thereby creating very ugly pictures.

Mid roll rewind is a bit of a chore. 1) Turn the command dial to ISO. 2) Remove the lens (or at least unlock it on the EF bayonet). 3) Push the rear buttons together simultaneously. The camera will rewind. 4) Replace the lens.

The SF function is "soft focus." In this mode the camera takes two photos, one a split second after the other. It defocuses the lens for the second shot, thereby rendering a softish blurry look to the photo. Obviously you have to have the lens in AF mode for this feature to work.

DEP is depth of field mode. Not to be confused with a depth of field preview, DEP is a function Canon likes to put onto its cameras that help you set the correct depth of field for your photos. Select this mode, then focus on the first item in your photo and then the second. The display will show dEP 1 and dEP 2 as you do this. When you take the photo the camera will have set the correct aperture to get everything between both items in focus. If possible. If there isn't enough or there's too much light then the display will flash.

Hope that helps. And thanks to Julian Loke, who mentioned some of these hidden features to me a little while ago in an email.

Neil forgot to mention that you can also set the MUSIC to OFF. The camera beep when focus is achieved is silenced, but the self-timer still beeps.

Cheers

Actually, I was describing the Rebel S II, which doesn't have focus confirmation beeps as far as I can tell. The audio setting just goes from 1 to 4. Is there a 0 or something on your 1000FN?

Presumably at this point in time Canon didn't have access to a focus beep patent, because the EOS 100 has optional focus beeping but the Elan, which is the same model for the North American market, does not. And these cameras all came out in the early 90s.

On my EOS 1000FN setting Music to 0 disables the IN-FOCUS beep. The self timer still uses beeps (just as if Music=1).
