Tamworth pigs in East NC/Grazing

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We are looking for Tamworth's for their grazing properties. Does anyone have experience with them? Does anyone know of a breeder in NC preferably in the East? We have been reading Small-Scale Livestock Farming and are very interested! Lynn

Any pig will graze. My Hampshire has been grazing for over 3 years. Pasture raised hogs seem to be more popular in some areas of the country than others.

Any chicken will lay eggs, too. But some are better at it than others.

I, too, have been looking for a breeder of Tamwoth pigs as close by as possible. The only breeder I have found (and I couldn't get any response from the breed club) is in either South Dakota or Minn., can't remember which. I live in Washington state, and our present pigs are pasture raised and graze, but I believe it may be a vast difference from pigs intended for that. Hope this thread continues!

Fran, try the PasturedPigs

list.

Greg Gunthorpe is on that list and he is the pastured pigs guru. Tamworths have been discussed several times on that list, someone may be able to help you. Check the archives first, they have a pretty good search utility, just search on "Tamworth".

These folks should be able to help you find a breeder:

Tamworth Swine Association 200 Centenary Rd. Winchester, OH 45697 Phone: 937-695-0114

The Tamworth is on the 'rare' list.

Scroll down to 'pigs.'

Greg and Lei Gunthorp from LaGrange, Indiana have been pasturing pigs for quite a spell. They're nice folks who would be happy to give you info:
