Cabinet Incubators : LUSENET : Freedom! self reliance : One Thread

Do any of you have any recommendations for the larger circulated air type of incubators? I've been building my flocks with two little styrofoam incubators, but the hatch percentage is not very good, barely over 50% at best. I've been looking for a used cabinet type incubator for over a year, but so far no luck. The new ones in the catalogs are unmercifully expensive. If they aren't a whole lot better than the styrofoam type I guess I'll just keep plugging along with them.

We have a GQF. Picked it up for 100$ after the EMU rage. I would bet if you ran an ad in your local, larger city next to you, asking to purchase one, that you would get 10 calls. Once you have used a larger unit, even for quail eggs:) You simply will never believe that you ever used the little styrofoam kind. Donate it to a science class at your local elementary school! I buil one using an old refridgerator. using it's own fan and lightbulb. I put a thermostat in from an electric heater and brought a digital thermomter (indoor/outdoortype) and ran the out side lead into the inside of the box...July 4th I will let you know if it works.

The fella I bought my keets from this spring had picked up two very nice incubators from someone bailing out of emu ranching. he gave $150 for two incubators and a drying cabinet. I believe he told me that the cost would have been about $5oo per incubator new and his hatch rate on keets was 70 to 80 percent and he still ran about 50 on the peafowl. So I guess I am seconding Vicki, but not from personal experience.

I am very curious about the refrigerator experiment. Can't wait to hear about it, Grant! I had my eye on a neighbor's discarded freezer, but couldn't get the help to load it up to try the same type of thing.
