bean/pea sheller suggestionsgreenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread |
We are thinking about getting a bean/pea sheller. Do they really work without squishing the bean or pea? Any advice for/against a particular brand? (Electric or hand powered) Thanks!

I have had my best results using a hyper 12 year old and subtle bribe (like I wouldn't go with him and his freinds to the all nite skate).

Jay, loved your answer. As I was shelling peas yesterday, I thought about those machines but then decided that I really enjoy sitting outside and shelling. It is so peaceful.
If you do get one, post here and let us know how it worked.

I dont like them at all. My in laws had one for about 20 years and thought I was crazy not to use it. It smashed some and skinned some and changed the taste when they was cooked. I'll take a dishpan under a shade tree with a mason jar of iced tea any day. Its a good excuse to sit down. Blessings Peggy

Thanks for responding. Yeah, I agree it is a good "excuse" to sit down. We do grow ALOT of dry beans though. Would squishing be as much of an issue when they are dry?
